CASAA is requesting our comments to be sent to the FDA regarding labeling vaping products as “tobacco” related products and the claims that can be associated with those labels. The supposed purpose is to reduce confusion among consumers in relation to these products. The reality is, though, that claims on vaping products could end up being a lie if we do not do something about this.
Here is the response that I am sending to the FDA, and I very strongly encourage you to do the same.
I am commenting on the Proposed Rule “Clarification of When Products Made or Derived From Tobacco Are Regulated as Drugs, Devices, or Combination Products; Amendments to Regulations Regarding ‘Intended Uses’”(Docket No. FDA-2015-N-2002)
As an individual consumer, I used e-cigarette products such as blu, Mark Ten, and other convenience store products to try and reduce my tobacco consumption. That failed miserably, due in part to the incredibly high nicotine levels of these products. Most of these have nicotine levels much higher than a normal cigarette, and did not do anything to help me towards my goal of quitting smoking.
Once I started using an open tank system, I was able to control my nicotine levels and actually felt cleaner and healthier than using any other product. The truth is that the nicotine from these products is derived from vegetables and not from the tobacco leaf used by the major corporations that produce what is commonly referred to as the “e-cigarette”.
Any attempt to group these open tank systems with devices produced by big-tobacco is a huge mistake, and can cause massive health issues to those individuals who think they can use an e-cigarette to quit tobacco use. If you go to CASAA.org, you will see several testimonials of individuals who were able to use devices and juices to quit smoking successfully without using products such as blu, Mark Ten, and Vuse.
I feel that if vaping products and devices were separated from big tobacco’s e-cigarettes, the benefit to public health would be astounding. Millions of lives could be saved if vaping products were treated as they are, which is a nicotine dependency reduction device. These devices have helped to drastically reduce my dependency on cigarettes over the past 7 months, and they can do the same for millions of consumers.
