Product Review: Vuse e-cigarette

Let me start off by saying that I am a smoker. I started when I was 19 years old and unfortunately haven’t put down the habit in the last 13-14 years. The latest fad in e-cigarettes was intriguing to me, but the amount of product on the market is a little insane. Vape shops are popping up all over the country, and to someone who is just getting into it, the task can be a little bit daunting.

I am going to post reviews for product as I try them. I want to make clear in this that I am not endorsing any of these items. Please use precaution and look into these items before you make a decision, if you feel like checking this out.

Now, on to the review…

If you subscribe to any mailing lists relating to smoking, you have no doubt seen offers from Vuse to try their product. I received an offer for a free starter kit when this was first introduced to the market. A few months later, I received two coupons for free or BOGO refill cartridges. I even received an e-mail to try this for $1.

It all sounded very intriguing to me, and I am all about trying free product.

The starter kit costs about $10, and comes with one battery, one cartridge (either regular or menthol), and a USB charger. Each refill pack contains 2 cartridges in foil packaging, costing about $6 for the two pack.
I bought the menthol based off of my personal preference. I usually prefer menthol cigarettes, so it was as good a place to start as any.

The battery started with a little bit of a charge, so I was able to try it immediately. The menthol taste was pretty sweet at first, no real issues initially. I took the packet home and started charging. The battery refilled in just over an hour, with an indicator light to show if it was charging (red pulsing while it’s plugged in) or if it was completely full (solid white light while plugged).

The cartridge doesn’t have anything to seal either end. Once you go for a refill, the cartridge immediately comes out of a foil package and plugs into the battery. No stickers, no plugs, nothing to mess with. The flavor seemed pretty awesome at first. The menthol has a pretty powerful punch without tasting like a mouthful of peppermint or medicated cream. The regular has a very bold black coffee taste (by the way, most regular flavor seems to have a black coffee taste). I noticed the next morning, though, that the cartridges don’t maintain a steady flavor. The first several puffs tasted like a bunch of liquid as opposed to the vapor. There were several times I coughed pretty heavily from the menthol and the heaviness of the taste.

One issue I noticed is that when I would hold the assembled cigarette, I needed to keep the farthest end pointed down. If I tilted up, I could see vapor still coming from the mouthpiece for several seconds after I stopped inhaling. With the heavy taste and the leaking vapor, there is definitely some adjustment that needs to be done on the actual product itself. It serves its purpose pretty dependably, though, so I can’t complain too much.

The only other issue I have is with the charger. The battery literally snaps into the USB charger with no way to secure it. An alternative option (screw connection, or something more secure) would be a fantastic addition on future versions.

All in all this is a decent product if you are just starting out and possibly needing something for a weekend trip away with family or other non-smokers. I would not recommend this for regular use, though, as I’m sure the battery will not last as long after a few months. I’ll update this later as far as the long term usage.
